The Opener Is Usually Innocent
A large share of the calls that begin with the words bad opener turn out to be a perfectly serviceable opener attached to a door it can no longer lift.
The symptoms overlap almost exactly, which is why this is such a common misdiagnosis and why it is worth its own page. The door starts up and stops. It reverses partway. The motor sounds like it is working hard near the floor. The light flashes and it clicks off. All of that reads as a failing opener, and all of it is also what a healthy opener does when the counterbalance behind it has gone.
Why the Mistake Costs So Much
An opener is one of the more expensive things on a garage door. A spring is one of the cheaper ones. Replacing the opener when the spring is the problem means paying the larger bill and still having the fault, because the new opener will be asked to lift the same excessive weight and will strain in the same way, usually within weeks.
Worse, it often gets papered over. The new unit is installed, the door still struggles, so the force settings get wound up until it stops complaining. Now the door is heavy and the safety reversal has been dialled out of it, which is exactly the combination UL 325 entrapment protection exists to prevent.
The Test We Run First
It takes about a minute and you can do it yourself tonight.
- With the door closed, pull the emergency release cord to disconnect the trolley from the opener.
- Lift the door by hand. It should move with modest effort and no sudden heaviness anywhere in the travel.
- Stop with the bottom of the door about waist high and take your hands off it.
A door with a correct counterbalance will stay roughly where you left it, perhaps drifting an inch or two. A door that drops is under sprung, which is the usual outcome after a spring has weakened or one of a pair has broken. A door that shoots upward is over sprung, which happens after a spring was replaced with heavier wire than the door needs.
If the door fails that test, the opener is not your problem, or at least not your first problem.
What We Check Beyond the Hand Test
Balance is the headline, but a door that feels heavy is not always a spring. We work through the same list in the same order every time.
The rollers and track. A dry or seized roller, or a track pinched out of alignment, adds drag that feels like weight. Common near the water where the bearings pick up salt.
The cables and drums. A cable that has jumped its groove, or drums that are out of time with each other, makes the door pull unevenly and bind in the track.
The spring itself. Broken springs are obvious. Fatigued ones are not. A spring that is at the end of its cycle life still looks intact and has simply lost the torque it started with.
The opener, last. Travel limits, force settings, the photo eyes, the safety reverse against a solid object, and on newer installations the battery backup that California has required on residential openers since July 2019 under SB 969.
When It Really Is the Opener
Sometimes it is. Stripped drive gears, a failed logic board, a chain or belt that has had its life, or a unit old enough that parts are no longer sensible to buy. When we find that, we say so plainly and quote for it.
The point is not that openers never fail. It is that the door gets tested before the opener gets condemned, because the test costs almost nothing and the alternative costs several hundred dollars and does not work.
If You Are Already Holding a Quote
Bring it to us. If somebody has quoted you for an opener and nobody pulled the release cord and lifted the door in front of you, that is worth a second opinion before you commit. Ask them what the door did in their hands at waist height. It is a fair question and it has a simple answer.
