One Trade, Done Repeatedly

The reason for the narrowness is simple enough. A garage door looks like carpentry and behaves like a counterbalance machine. General building experience, however deep, does not carry across into it, because almost nothing else on a construction site involves winding several hundred pounds of stored energy into a length of spring steel and then trusting it above your head.

What Repetition Actually Buys

It buys pattern recognition. After enough doors you stop guessing at a spring and start measuring it, because you have seen too many doors running on whatever happened to be on somebody’s van. You learn that a new insulated section changes the weight and therefore the whole calculation. You learn that drums carry a stamped number for a reason, and that the number matters most on the doors where headroom is tight or the track has been converted to high lift.

You also learn the shape of the mistake that hurts people, which is removing a loaded fastener in the wrong order.

The Line We Draw

We are not precious about it. A handyman can change a roller, a hinge, a bottom seal or a weatherstrip, and there is nothing wrong with that. Those parts are not carrying the door.

Springs, cables and bottom brackets are. That is the line, and it is drawn around what the part is holding rather than around anybody’s skill.

How the Work Runs

The same sequence on every door. Measure before ordering anything. Wind to the calculated turns rather than to feel. Then disconnect the opener, lift the door by hand, and let go of it at waist height. If it stays put, the counterbalance is right and the opener can go back on. If it does not, nothing else gets connected until it does.
